Process Piece: Boarding a Plane

I wanted to continue my experiments with sound production,
so for this piece I decided to record the audio track of the process of
boarding a plane. I went home for the weekend to visit my family and I used the
natural opportunity to record my travels. I set my constraints to what I could
record on my phone while in the airport and on the airplane. I also used completely
natural sounds. I did not specifically set up or doctor any of the sounds
during the recording process. The only editing tool I used was trimming down
the length of files and small fades at the beginning and end of the clip to point
out the beginning and the end of the story more drastically to the audience.
However, every sound is part of my actual experience in the airport and boarding
the plane.
Since moving to Utah for school, flying home to Colorado has
become a more frequent and exciting process for me. It was not difficult to
produce a work that was personal and meaningful to me as an artist, but it was
more interesting to be the one in charge of setting some of the constraints. Studying
the form of audio only was just as big of an adventure to me as flying on an
airplane. I still have a lot to learn, but I can already see the power that sound
has to captivate and enthrall an audience more fully. While I can see the
technical benefits of learning sound production for a theatre classroom, it is
also intriguing for me to consider using sound as both a teaching tool and
learning opportunity for English students. It is the perfect way to explore a
new medium that can add to a storyteller’s impact, but it is also a form that not
many students are familiar with. For this reason, I think it would be a great way
to teach principles of media literacy using sound projects because students
would need to engage in the entire process of seeking to understand more about
the genre, looking at the techniques and artists’ motivations, and trying to
apply some of those techniques or ideas into the student’s personal work from
the beginning to the end. It could be a great example project that can teach
concepts that apply to all types of media.
