Class Assignment Remix
(With Christan Lewis and Emma O'Barr)
Remix Defined:
The concept of Remix often referenced in popular culture derives from the model of music remixes which were produced around the late 1960s and early 1970s in New York ... A music remix, in general, is a reinterpretation of a pre-existing song, meaning that the “aura” of the original will be dominant in the remixed version. remixtheory.net
The Assignment:
Each student will choose an existing, media representation of the culture, race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, etc. and remix it from the perspective of one character from our class novel.
Medium Constraint: The representation may be in any medium (film, photograph, visual art, poetry, literature, advertisement, news article, song, music video, etc.) but the specific media artifact they reference should have been created after the student was born. 5 points
Creative Constraint: Students will then remix the representation present in the media artifact. The medium should stay the same from the original to your creation; lyrics - lyrics, video - video, photograph - photograph, etc. 15 points
Contextual Constraint: The remixed representation you create must demonstrate your chosen character’s negotiation of identity as described above. 20 points
Reflection Constraint: 250 words about the Project: Artist/Teacher statements should be written from the perspective of the character and include a discussion of the correlations and contradictions between your remix (perspectives, practices, etc.) and the representation of this aspect of your character’s identity. 10 points.
It is recommended that each student create a brief character outline in order to help him or her identify an aspect of the character’s identity to hone in on.
